"There are songs of sweetness and light for the head and heart, but there also songs of grit and groove that make those little hairs on the back of your neck stand up and scream, 'give me more of that!' Is it working for them? I believe so." (The Charlottetown Guardian)
Anchored in a sound influenced by roots, soul, jazz, contemporary folk, and pop sensibilities, Carly and Mark have a highly palatable sound that is unmistakably their own. The band first made strides as a Kitchener-based acoustic duo – coupling the forte of Mark Hart (guitar and vocals) and Carly Blasutti (vocals). In 2008 the duo grew to include the radiant additions of colleagues Bret Higgins (upright bass – also of The Great Lake Swimmers, Basia Bulat), Joshua Van Tassel (drums – also of Valery Gore, David Myles), and Joel Schwartz (National guitar and mandolin – also of The Great Lake Swimmers, Royal Wood). Currently Toronto and Kitchener-based, the five-piece culminates years of musical study, experience, cross-genre appetite, and ingenuity into a seamlessly moving collaboration with many endearing parts. Presently the band is hard at work crafting material for their sophomore release which will be placed in the careful hands of highly touted producer/engineer David Travers-Smith.
